THANKS FOR A WONDERFUL YEAR!

Well, today was our official last day of first grade….and I am sending my first grade babies off to second grade.  (*sniffle*) It is such a bittersweet time of the year for teachers.  We’ve grown so close to our students, we’ve worked so hard to develop classroom routines, and have built wonderful friendships and relationships with parents/families, and have had so many lovely experiences and adventures…and then… we send them off… (*sniffle*)  I will miss my sweet students, and am so proud of them!  However, I do look forward to spending some quality time with my own two babies!

Thank you for the many wonderful memories! This truly has been an unforgettable year!
I gave each student a copy of this video I made, using a program that is new to me called, Smilebox.  I hope you enjoy!
Have a safe, fun-filled summer!  Come back soon….I have some fantastic pictures from our awesome end-of-year celebration that I will share soon!

Weekly Update ~ 6/2/12

Can you believe it's June?  My first graders will officially become second graders in just 6 school days!

Language Arts

- We’ve been busy little readers these past two weeks!  Last week we enjoyed reading a nonfiction story, How a Tiger Cub Grows Up, which provided detailed information about the stages of a tiger’s life.  The children loved looking at the real photographs of baby Tara and her trainers.  She was adorable as she learned to eat, play, and swim!  Check out the mini-books we created to practice retelling the main events of her life.

Making Mini-Books!

-This week, we had even more fun with the lovable pig, Olivia!  Our focus skill was comparing fantasy and reality.  The children had a fun time creating Olivia the Pig out of construction paper, and then writing a book about the many ways in which she was a make-believe character.  Can you list reasons why Olivia is a fantasy?

Spelling

-In Spelling, the students were introduced to -oi and -oy words last week, as well as -oo words this week.  The students took part in many spelling activities to practice their new word families.  I am very pleased with the students’ performance on our weekly spelling tests and am happy to announce that this week’s spelling test was the last of the school year.
Playing spelling review games!

Grammar

-In Grammar, we’ve been focusing on using adjectives to make our writing more exciting.  After reading Lauren Child’s book, I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato, we practiced using adjectives and the art of persuasion to convince Lola to try eating something new.  Take a look at our final products.  If you were Lola, would you be persuaded to taste the new food?

Math

-In Math, we have been working on telling time to the hour and half hour.  We are able to read both digital and analog clocks.  We will continue to work on telling time and identifying elapsed time throughout the remainder of the school year.

McCormick Madness Day!

-I think it is safe to say that we all had a fantastic McCormick Madness Day!  I would like to send a huge “THANK YOU” to our gym teacher, Mr. Blyzwick, for organizing the event.  Also, “THANK YOU” to all the parents and family members who volunteered to make this a wonderful day for students and staff.  We kicked-off our morning with carnival games such as ring toss, basketball, and ping pong.  The students also had their faces painted and jumped in a bounce house!  Following the carnival games and lunch, the Kona Ice truck visited our school, and we all enjoyed a refreshing snow cone!  Our afternoon was equally exciting as we participated in field games including potato sack race, hula hoop fun, and relay races.  The time and energy that was put into making this day a success did not go unnoticed.  We are proud to be at McCormick Elementary!

Fun with Adjectives!

I totally forgot to include our links to the fun adjective project we began. We created the first Storybird Adjectve book together as a class. Then, the students had an opportunity to create their own stories. Check out some of the stories the children wrote on this awesome interactive writing and storytelling website!

Weekly Update ~ 5/20/12

We had a colorful, fun-filled week

in first grade!

Language Arts
- In Language Arts, we read a colorful fantasy story called, Happy Fall!  In the beginning of the story, Pinwheel thought he broke the tree when he bumped into it and the leaves began to fall.  At the end of the story, he and his friends Squirrel and Owl had a blast jumping in the crisp, colorful leaves!  Our reading skill focused on retelling main events using a graphic organizer and sequential order (transition words: first, next, then, last).  The children had a lot of fun retelling their favorite story and/or movie to practice identifying main events.

Spelling
-In Spelling, the students were introduced to -ou and -ow words, which we referred to as the OUCH words.  The students took part in many spelling activities throughout the week to practice their new word families.  They especially enjoyed writing their words on neon colored band-aids.  Anytime they were asked what happened, or heard the word “ouch”, they had to spell one of their OUCH words.  Please be sure that your child completes his/her nightly spelling homework neatly!  Also, the children should be using proper letter formation in their daily writing.

Grammar
-Our Grammar lessons focused on identifying and using color words and number words as adjectives that describe.  We had plenty of fun discussing the importance of using adjectives to provide details in our writing.  We also had a fantastic time reading colorful books and practicing a reader’s theater story, My Crayons Talk.

Math
-In Math, we wrapped up Chapter 23, Money.  The students learned how to identify and count mixed coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half-dollars, and dollars).  We’ve been counting mixed coins, making trades, comparing amounts of money, and showing various ways to make a given amount of money.
